What is dry skin?
Dry skin occurs when water and natural oils are lost from the skin's top layers. Oil acts as a barrier to prevent the skin losing water, therefore one needs both oil and water to prevent dry skin.
Dry skin conditions can be inherited or they could be due to environmental factors like sun exposure or cold, dry air. Dry skin condition intensifies as you get older.
When the skin is dry it is felt as tight and flaky. Pores aren't visible and the skin looks dull. Dry itchy skin also feels rough. Dry skin makes you feel as if you are wearing a mask.

Another name for dry skin is xerosis. If the natural oil coating, produced by the skin oil glands, is removed then this can lead to cracking and then in turn to inflammation.
Xerosis is usually a long-term problem that recurs often, especially in the winter. Long hot baths, harsh soaps and cold winter weather worsens dry skin problems.
Dry skin treatment is intended to restore the natural oil to your skin
Below are some treatment suggestions:
* Dry skin treatment involves keeping the skin lubricated. Do not take more than one shower a day and use lukewarm water as hot water causes more dry skin.
* When toweling dry don't rub the dry skin, rather blot the skin so there is still some water left on the skin.
* Dry skin is irritated by soap, use soap that contains a moisturizer. Dry skin responds well to Cetaphil soap, Oil of Olay, Dove or Basis.
* If you like to swim during the winter months, rinse off the chlorine with cool to warm water so that the dry skin is well treated.
* Use an emollient liberally on dry skin. Apply it thick especially on dry itchy skin. Dry skin is usually a long term problem that recurs often, especially in winter. If the itchy dry skin returns, use the lubricating routine regularly.
